Stressed Out
August 22, 2008 – 11:00 pmWelcome back!
Have you ever been stressed? Many people will probably answer “Yes” to this question because so many things cause stress every day. Even though many people aren’t aware of some of the stressors that affect everybody, everyday. Examples of some are driving, school, work, family, crowded cities, lack of sleep, loss of someone close, and many more. Stress affects the body in many ways including weakening the immune system so it is susceptibility to colds and diseases. Besides weakening the immune system it has been proven that stress can lead to aging quicker. According to many researchers, stress and its effect on the body has surpassed the common cold as the health problem suffered by many in North America.
The body has developed ways of protecting itself from the effects of stress. One response is known as “fight or flight” which is a way the body deals with extreme situations. When the brain realizes that the body is threatened, it sets off an alarm telling the adrenal glands to secrete adrenaline and cortisol. This then starts the “fight or flight” response. This response is supposed to be a short reaction but because most people are in and out of this state often, the immune system becomes unbalanced. Our adrenal glands can become tired, weakening the body especially the cardiovascular and endocrine systems.
Cortisol is a misunderstood hormone and keeping in balance is important. It helps the body maintain stress levels, counteracts inflammation, and controls the metabolism of protein and carbohydrates. In low doses it helps the immune system but in high does, like from prescribed in drug form, it can suppress it.
Here are some stress busting tips:
> Breathing is a key distressing tool. Several times though out the day take deep breaths and slowly exhale through your mouth.
> Share the household duties with family so you are not trying to do it all.
> Eat 7-10 half-cup servings of fruit and vegetables each day.
> If you are grieving a loved one, going through a divorce, or just lost your job make sure you get help to deal with this stressful time in your life. Immune suppression can result when the situation is not dealt with properly in a timely manner.
> Smile and live life to the fullest everyday.
> Believe in yourself because positive energy increases your body’s ability to heal itself.
> Notice beautiful things around you and appreciate them.
> Be forgiving of people and let your family and friends know that you love them.
> Don’t be your own worst enemy by focusing on what you can’t do. Instead focus on what you are good at. Wake up everyday and be glad you are here.
> Learn something new. If you don’t succeed the first time try something else. Do whatever makes you happy.
One of the most important stress buster is getting 8 hours of sleep. According to British researchers, people who wake up between 5:22 am and 7:21 am have high levels of cortisol (a main stress hormone) in their body, so matter when the fell asleep. The stress level of early risers remains high all day. If you are trying to keep your cortisol low, don’t get up until 7:30 am! High cortisol levels can caused the immune system to weaken over time.
Remember, only you can control the stress in your life!
